Yes, especially grains. Everyone keeps asking me about where my fibre is coming from without grains. However there are others who do think it is a good idea. And others who admit that they are jealous of the discipline required to stick to the challenge.
Ha ha!! You just have to ask those peeps whether they think that everyone else around them in this society is eating "properly" and otherwise maintaining a healthy lifestyle...heart disease, cancer, diabetes, auto-immune disorders, obesity, Alzheimer's/dementia, exhaustion, stress....
I feel like a bit of a radical! But I'm reading Robb Wolf's new book The Paleo Solution so I have something to respond when people say "That's unhealthy because ...". Good read, especially if you're interested in the "Why's".
I have given up trying to argue why this is healthier. In fact, I don't even try to explain why some foods are allowed and other are not.
I simply tell people it is a nutrition challenge to try and eat healthier. That's it, that's all. The less info I give them, the fewer questions I get.
I have the few people outside of CFK that know about it, wondering where I get my carbs & fibre!
Of course I have Jeff (Dawson) who is always trying to force chips, chocolate and all kinds of crap down my throat, and I just have to tell him that I prefer to eat meat, vegetables, nuts, seeds and a small amount of fruit and starch....sugarfree ;) hahaha
Breakfast - banana, boiled egg, nuts Lunch - mixed green salad with a chicken breast Snack - roast beef, carrots, strawberries and nuts Supper - spaghetti squash with tomatoes, green & red pepper, green onion, garlic and extra lean hamburger
Foster... I agree with what you are saying. However, I don't think I would ever bring that up in conversation. That is definitely the start of a confrontation. I'm sure you wouldn't say that to someone, but I'm just making sure that everyone is aware that this could put you at the losing end of a battle.
Kait... I've heard so many good things about Robb's book. I can't wait to get it myself and see what he has to say. He is a very intelligent man and has done his research.
Matt... For this challenge I have allowed the use of Stevia. But be careful about all that baking, even though you are not using wheat/grain products, you will still get an insulin response.

-1 bowl homemade chicken soup with carrots, celery, kale, chicken, 1/2 can of tuna (plain), coffee with cream
-apple + other half of the avocado
-chicken stir fry with peppers, celery, onion
-steak (4 oz) with 2 oz cheese, 10 grape tomatoes, 10 grapes
-other half of the can of tuna, 1 glass red wine
--Dawson--thanks for your comments--very helpful--you are right that I wouldn't say that to peeps on the street but I since I counsel patients on nutrition, I can get away with a lot more in my treatment room and have always been a tough love sorta girl...:)
I also wanted to mention that I am sleeping much better, not as hungry as before, way clearer--no brain fog or mid day tired, although I do run out of steam in the eve around 9. I think things are generally reprogramming for the better.
The wine experiment is also interesting. I am used to imbibing a glass or two on most days of the week, with no discernable effect. However, I notice the sugar effect of the wine at nite after not having it all day, or even for the past week. The other nite I drank a glass of red, checked the blog and went off to bed. Something on the blog struck me as absolutely hilarious and I laughed hysterically--in bed--for about 20 minutes. Felt light headed and couldn't settle down for quite some time. My spouse, needless to say, got up and moved to the spare room....SUGAR RUSH!!!!! It's funny to think about how this "normal" reaction to sugar can be masked thru overconsumption...

Is anyone else getting tired of having to justify the nutrition challenge to friends and family? And why it is OK to cut out entire food groups?

YES! At work the other day I got asked if/why I always eat "all fucked up"...I just stopped trying to explain!

I'm tired of explaining that it's not a diet, but a lifestyle...I'm with you Linds- I've given up explaining.
Here's a paleo-esque recipe I've used in the past. It can be made into pancakes or cupcakes.
1 cup almond flour
2 eggs
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp oil
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp sweetener (can you use Stevia? Whatever's acceptable)
For cupcakes, I will add cinnamon or pumpkin spice.
For pancakes, pre-bake some bacon and add a slice per side. They're good hot or cold. It is heaven, It makes this: http://imgur.com/15KCJ.jpg
By the way, Bulk Barn has the best price on almond flour.
